Newton Longville Church of England Primary School

A love of reading

At Newton Longville, we are huge reading fans. We focus on opening our chidren's eyes to new books, new authors and experiences; getting ourselves lost in another world..

We are always looking for new books - have a look at our Amazon wishlist: https://amzn.eu/3GjCUQb     We welcome donations from anyone throughout the year. Each book has a special message written inside sharing who donated the book.

We are very fortunate at Newton Longville C of E Primary School to have established a link with ‘Our Bookshop’ in Tring – they organise a broad range of events for children and schools, which aim to encourage and inspire children’s love of reading. We are very fortunate at Newton Longville C of E Primary School to have established a link with ‘Our Bookshop’ in Tring – they organise a broad range of events for children and schools, which aim to encourage and inspire children’s love of reading.

Recent author visits

 David Baddiel

The children and staff in KS2 experienced an exciting ‘virtual’ visit today from children’s author and well-known comedian David Baddiel!

After settling into the Hall, not really knowing what was gong to happen, one of the first things the children heard was ‘Newton Longville Primary School’ being welcomed by Ben, the man from Tring Bookshop, who was interviewing David Baddiel. That set the excited tone for the next hour!

Both children and adults alike were entertained by stories about David’s childhood; his family; and his inspiration to become a comedian and author – his main inspiration being that he really wasn’t very good at playing football!

Listening to David read extracts from his book, ‘The Parent Agency’, left the children wanting to hear more. One child said, “It was really good –he gave us all a little ‘pinch’ of the story and now I want to read it all!”, whilst another said, “I didn’t think the book would be all that good, but now I feel really interested to read it all!” We got a couple of additional mentions too, when some of our children’s questions and choices of ‘ideal celebrity parents’ were read out! An amazing treat!

 Iona Rangley

Everyone in KS2 was thrilled to enjoy our author visit from Iona Rangeley! The children were engrossed hearing her tales of how she became an author – and where her ideas for the ‘Einstein the Penguin’ series of books began. She shared extracts from her latest book, taught us all a great deal about penguins, answered lots and lots of questions from the children, and signed every copy of her book individually. It was an amazing experience – a definite first for many of us – and is something we would love to do again in the future!
